David Marshall and Agnes Brownlie. Hi, I came across your marvellous Brownlee website and wonder if you might be able to steer me in the right direction.
My husband's ancestor, William Marshall, was born around 1790 in Shotts, Lanarkshire. On his death certificate, his son David gives William's parent's names as David Marshall and Agnes Brownlie. To date, I have been unable to find William's birth entry, other children or a marriage record for David and Agnes Brownlie. There are one of two possibilities - either the son got his grandparent's names wrong (unlikely given that he was named after one of them) or the records that I am looking for don't exist.
I looked at your spreadsheet (Banns & Marriages 1538-1854) of all the marriages and they are not there. Do you think my Agnes is one of the Agneses in some of your charts? I did a search but couldn't find any reference to an Agnes Brownlie marrying a Marshall. Do you know where Torfoot is in relation to Shotts? It is possible she is one of the 'unattached' Agneses in the Torfoot line but I don't know where these places are in relation to each other? Are you able to help me in any way - happy to share information (once I can get further than this brick wall!).
I do love the fact that all Brownlees come from Scotland, I just need to figure out where mine come into this!! Many thanks, Kim Wight. kmw1995@hotmail.com
See Chart 10172 Administrator's note: Shotts is in North Lanarkshire and Torfoot, Strathaven is in South Lanarkshire but of course it is very possible that Agnes could have been a descendant of the Torfoot family. Click here for more information on the Torfoot Research Project.

Joseph Brownlee of Abbeville County. I cannot seem to find out who the parents of Joseph Brownlee of Abbeville County, South Carolina were. All sources I have found on Joseph have him listed as being born in 1825 in Abbeville County, South Carolina and he passed away 20 April 1893 in Calhoun County, Georgia. He was my 3rd great grandfather on my mother's side (her maiden name was Brownlee). Some sources have a Joseph Brownlee (1781-1864), a son of Joseph Brownlee and Esther Campbell, as his father. Other sources say that particular Joseph went to TX and he couldn't be my Joseph's father. If anyone has any information they can share I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you, Anna Pueschel. annapueschel@hotmail.com

Agnes Brownlee married William Loudon in 1755. I am trying to find an Agnes Brownlee who married William Loudon in 1755. William was from Glasgow. I am guessing that she was Agnes Brownlee b. 31 Dec. 1736 to Thomas Brownlee , 4th Laird of Torfoot. The dates fit but I have no proof. Can you help me? Thanks, Louise Harrison louiseh451@gmail.com

Brownlee and Forrest - Saw Mills, Scotland and New Zealand. My brick wall is finding the parents of Robert Forrest c1750.  Married Helen Hamilton (1750-1838) probably the daughter of Andrew Hamilton and Marion Renwick (Lesmahagow and Thripwood), and their five children were born in Braidwood, Carluke. James 1783, Marion 1785. Andrew 1788, twins Robert and John 1790. Marion's daughter Helen Jack (b1808) married Thomas Brownlee.  Andrew's son Robert (b1808) married Agnes Brownlee, John married Janet Brownlee, and their son Andrew (b 1836), a wheel wright apprentice at the mill, (census 1851), was living at that time with his uncle James Dick who married Margaret Brownlee. I am sure there are more Forrest Brownlee connections in Scotland.  In NZ the Forrests worked at the Brownlee sawmills and the families lived near each other in Marlborough. My aunt has Brownlee as a second name. Help with finding the parents of Robert c1750 would be much appreciated.  After his marriage Robert was recorded as being the proprietor of Woodhall, a small farm near Braidwood, Carluke.  His son James succeeded him to Woodhall but the property appears to have gone out of the family after James died 1857. John Brownlee of Torfoot Farm in Avondale Parish, Scotland. My brick wall is finding the wife of my ancestor, John Brownlee.  He was b. 11 Apr 1699 at Torfoot Farm (Avondale Parish Records) the son of John, the 3rd Laird.  He came to America and settled in Lancaster County Pennsylvania.  He probably came shortly after his father's death in 1747 as 3 of his children were baptized in December 1751 by Rev. John Cuthbertson.
He was probably married by 1730 but I haven't been able to find any marriage in Lanarkshire or Ayrshire that seems to fit.
His known children were:
Jean, prob. the Jean "born to John 'Burnlee' of Evandale on Apr 10 1736 and baptized by Reverend John McMillan at Braehead on May 23, 1736"; md. by Rev. John Cuthbertson to John Gabby in PA in 1757.
James, prob. the James "born to John 'Burnlee' of Evandale on Oct 4 1738 and baptized by Reverend John McMillan at Braehead on Dec 15 1738", md by Rev. John Cuthbertson to Elizabeth Rankin in PA in 1769.
Margaret, md. by Rev. John Cuthbertson to James Leeper in PA in 1769.
John, bpt in PA by Rev. John Cuthbertson in 1751
Helen, bpt in PA by Rev. John Cuthbertson in 1751
Mary, bpt in PA by Rev. John Cuthbertson in 1751
Isobel, bpt in PA by Rev. John Cuthbertson in 1754.
Rev. Cuthbertson was b. in Ayrshire Scotland and was a student of Rev. John McMillan.  He came to America in Sept. 1751, 3 months before baptizing the Brownlee chidren.

James Brownlee, son of William Brownlee and Margaret Frazer

Looking for more information about the family of James Brownlee born about 1850 in Co. Fermanagh (possibly Enniskillen) the son of William Brownlee and Margaret Frazer.
James was in the Royal Irish Constabulary and posted to Granard, Co. Longford where he met and married one of the 6 daughters of the Head Constable Thomas Cosgrove.  He married Lizzie (also known as Elizabeth Jane) Cosgrove on 26 June 1874 at the parish church Granard.
Their surviving children were:
Robert James
Margaret Jane
William Thomas
Frederick Frazer
Martha Frances
Henry
George Alfred
Rhoda E
Robert married Isabella Foster and worked for the Great Northern Railway in Dundalk. William was a Methodist Minister and married Evelyn Gracey.  Frederick married Martha Carroll but I don't know anything about his calling.
Isabella Foster and Martha Carroll were the grand-daughters of the previously mentioned Thomas Cosgrove.  So their children are doubly Cosgrove and I would love to know more about them.
I descend from Thomas Cosgrove's elder son John who married Emma Palmer.
Thanks
Isabel Cosgrove

Hi Isabel,
There were seven persons with the surname BROWNLEE who joined the Royal Irish Constabulary between 1816 & 1922, including JAMES BROWNLEE and two others who were born in Co. Fermanagh.
Have you obtained a copy of the RIC Service Record of JAMES BROWNLEE & Head Constable Thomas Cosgrove?
Best regards,
Jim Herlihy

Andrew Jackson Brownlee born 1829 in Kentucky
I am interested in being listed on your site. Our line begins with Andrew Jackson Brownlee, born in Kentucky in 1829. We do not know the parentage of Andrew, only that in the 1910 US census, he lists his father as born in Scotland. We have a family bible that list all of his children, one of whom is my great grandfather Fred Brownlee. His son William S Brownlee is my grandfather, and still living at the age of 96. He served in Germany in WWII. He has 3 sons, all of whom have passed form this life in their 50's. The middle son, Fred Allison Brownlee is my father. I am the oldest of his children and My name is Freda Allison Brownlee George. I am working on a detailed tree on Ancestry.com, listing all of the descendants of Andrew. Would love to know of more of the Scottish history and finding the father of Andrew Jackson Brownlee.
