1776 - Roll of Capt. Joseph Erwin’s Company, (History of Westmoreland Co. PA, pg 455)
This company was raised in Westmoreland County, joined the regiment at Marcus Hook, subsequently included in the Thirteenth Pennsylvania Regiment, then in the Second, and finally discharged at Valley Forge, Jan. 1, 1778, by reason of expiration of term of enlistment. Engagements were Long Island, White Plains, Trenton, Princeton, Quibbletown, Brandywine, and Germantown.
Private John Brownlee, April 1, 1776; disch. Jan 1, 1778. Lived in Donegal Twp. Washington Co. in 1814, moved to Brooke Co. VA where he d. sometime after 1834. (Pension File for John Brownlee, #16462)
Lieutenant, Joseph Brownlee, commission dated April 15, 1776; captured at the Battle of Long Island Aug 27, 1776, exchanged 9th December, 1776, promoted to 2nd Lt. Oct 24, 1776; promoted to 1st Lt. PA State Reg. 18th April, 1777; resigned 22d June, 1777. He and his son, John, were killed by the Indians in their raid on Hannastown in July 1782. He entered the service at the early part of the war, dropping his studies in College. . . .son of G. H. and M. Brownlee of Calhoun C., Ala., was 23 years old.
