Fire at Garrion Mill in 1970 Against the Grain: Two grain mills once used by the 'Better Canna Be' McGregor Company were badly damaged within 36 hours of each other in March 1970. Coincidentally an advertisement in the Advertiser the previous Friday intimated a plan to convert one of the mills into a hotel. The first fire was at the Garrion Mill, Garrion Bridge on Sunday, the second at the Town Mill, Strathaven, on Tuesday. Newmains police thought the first fire was accidently started by young boys who had been fishing sheltering from the rain in the mill. |
