William Brownlie in Carluke, Scotland

William Brownlie (see also Chart 10046) was born in Carluke on 6 November 1859. On 31 December 1882 in Lanark he married Elizabeth Mount who was also born in Lanark on 26 July 1863. For quite some time they lived in Motherwell Road in Bellshill and later came to New Zealand. William was a miner and when he was on late shift, Elizabeth would knit while waiting for him to come home. Her knitting consisted of socks and underwear suitable for that cold climate and she would knit up to two skeins of wool in an evening. The children would be in their shared beds and should the current baby or toddler be restless, she would cross her feet and rock the baby against her knees while continuing her knitting. The children grew up and the family line grew longer. School days, snow in the winter, children’s clothes, hers and William’s clothes, lace collars and crocheted camisoles to be laundered and ironed, house tidied and cleaned, the back doorstep washed and all the other chores around the house were always done before she went out. This was her way of ensuring that any unexpected callers would know she was a diligent housewife.

It was in 1910 when the decision was made, boat fares were arranged and William, Elizabeth and with eight children in tow, the family boarded the train for London, drawing much attention wherever they went. It was London where they boarded the RMS Arawa and then followed weeks at sea. Their arrival in Cape Town, South Africa found the city to be in mourning and the shops all draped in black. King Edward VII was dead. From here they travelled on to Australia and it was there that they briefly met granddad’s sister Mrs Black. The last leg of the journey by sea was to Wellington, New Zealand and then a stormy passage up the east coast to Napier and Auckland. This was the worst of the journey where all but Ina (Thomasina) were seasick.

Mr Fred Rout of the Brethren assembly met the family at Auckland. The final part of the journey was to Huntly, where Thomas and Catherine Brownlie had settled after emigrating in 1907. The family’s first home in New Zealand, though just a small cottage, must have been wonderful for them after the tenement buildings in Glasgow. In Hill Street, Huntly, (now Raynors Road) the air was so much clearer than Glasgow and having the freedom to walk and run without going up and down all those stairs was wonderful.

The older girls found employment in “service” to Doctors and other professional people. Ina became a tailor and Joe worked in the mine. The three little children still went to school. Elizabeth was missing her two elder, married children and so began to save her gold coins to go “home” to see them.

In 1911, Helen and George Dow emigrated to New Zealand along with their two children. The third child, Nellie, was born six weeks after their arrival in New Zealand.

World War I broke out with its problems and the great flu epidemic brought the sick to be cared for and succoured.

In February 1921 John and Jean Brownlie with their three children arrived in New Zealand to make Huntly their home too.

Roots went down deep and the second family home at “The Mount”, 20 Raynors Road was where the family finally settled together. It was in this home that baby Janet was born in 1916 and she stayed on to care for the two elderly parents, along with Aunty Kate and eventually her own six children.

Elizabeth no longer needed to save those gold coins for a trip to Scotland, as her family were together again in their new home, and now several of those gold sovereigns are necklaces worn by her granddaughters.

William Brownlie, apart from mining, took the land where Uncle Bill Brownlie was farming until recently (1984), and walked out carrying tools etc. to work on that land. The Muncaster Farm was also taken on lease and worked – though this did require travelling on horse and trap.

So the family worked together and loved and cared for each other, and as each of the 27 grandchildren came along, the love and care just stretched out into their lives as well.

It is also noted that the name of John Snelling’s farm is Carluke Farms, the Cargill sisters having owned a Home Cookery business in that town in Scotland as well[1]. William Brownlie died in 1944 and Elizabeth in 1946.

Thomas Brownlie emigrated in the early 1900s to New Zealand and settled in Huntly[3]. He married (?).

Thomas Brownlie[4] born 22 August 1925. Lived at 82 Kapanui Road, Waikanae, North Island of New Zealand. He married (?).
