Email: 20 August 2003 - Apart from my great grandmother Janet, I know nothing of the lives of the others, although Helen and Barbara did spend some years in Dunedin to support their sister. Elizabeth married into the well respected, Docharty family of painters. I have the original letter written to my grandmother from Alexander Brownlie NJ, in which he refers to members of his family in the US. Information supplied by David Smale, Auckland NZ.

Email: 27 February 2005 - An article in The Montclair Times, 10 October 2003, refers to a walking tour of Montclair NJ, highlighting turn of the century artists. At the conclusion is a list of the artists’ homes, including my Alexander Brownlie Docherty at 338 Bloomfield Avenue (1904-05).

The original letter from Alexander Brownlie to my maternal grandmother (her grandfather being Alexander Brownlie, born 1800, and father of this Alexander) was written from that address. His sister Elizabeth married James Docherty in 1859, the mother of Alexander Brownlie Docherty, the quite famous Scottish painter.
