Canadian information supplied by:

Lynn Crockett jic95129family@yahoo.com - I received a two page listing from a Cowan researcher - eventually, someone from this Brownlee family married into our Cowan line; they were in the Simcoe County, York County, Ontario area.  I have supplied as the pages read and as taken from Scotland by George Brownlee in 1925.

NOTES:

Elizabeth McAlpine aged 9 years was a granddaughter of Thomas Black and Elizabeth Brownlee according to the 1871 census records for Leaend Farm, New Monkland.

19/2/2005 – Pamela Gilchrist Green  - My grandmother was the grandchild of Claud Brownlie and Janet Frame, a farming family from Low Waters Village near to Hamilton town.  She told me that all the Brownlies were related to one another, and that various branches had spread to Strathaven, Lesmahagow, and Carluke etc.

She also told me that the Brownlee families were NOT related to the Brownlies. However, sometimes the names did get mixed up and were spelled wrongly. (NB. While I have heard this comment before, even my great grandmother said something similar, I firmly believe this theory to be a myth as there is plenty of evidence to suggest otherwise and in my opinion both variations came from the same roots. There could be two families in the same town or village with different spellings who did not know of any connection but if traced back could be connected. The evidence even appears in this chart. I’m sure if one can find the original roots we will all be connected – Ian Brownlee).

Her two, elder brothers, immigrated to Australia in the late 1880's.  Claude acquired land and became a sheep farmer and a year later James followed him and got the land next to his. Claude married a Dutch schoolteacher and had twenty children.  James got married and one of his sons William came to Scotland in the 1920's and visited my grandmother and other relatives.

Unfortunately, over time all contact was lost with the Australian end of the line.

22/2/2005 – Pamela Gilchrist Green - I have just found this note in my papers, which may shed some light on the geographic location of the Brownlie farms. Could the reference to a river, refer to New South Wales?

"James More went to Australia to work on his Uncle James Brownlie's sheep farm but died shortly afterwards in accident whilst working on the river logging timber."  "The More family blamed the Brownlies for encouraging him to go to Australia. They severed all communications with the Brownlies."

Great aunt Jane Brownlie married William More of the Plymouth Brethren. They lived in Mount Florida near Glasgow. Children: James, Jeanie, Cathy, Sarah and Mary. Since he was their only son, one can appreciate the depth of their loss.

21/3/2005 – Lynn Crockett jic95129family@yahoo.com - Ann Hamilton, was born c1834. There are two possible threads regarding Ann Hamilton’s pedigree. (see email from Lynn Crockett 21/3/05)

1.   Ann Hamilton born Lesmahagow, the daughter of Mathew Hamilton born 12 August 1809 christened 19 August 1809 at Stonehouse and Ann Hunter born 1810 at Lesmahagow. Mathew and Ann were married on 11 April 1828 at Lesmahagow. Mathew died 7 September 1897 at Stonehouse, Ann died 17 November 1895 at Stonehouse and they are both buried at St Ninians Churchyard in Stonehouse

2.   Anne Hamilton born Avondale daughter of William Hamilton and Grace or Grizzel Craig

21/3/2005 – Lynn Crockett jic95129family@yahoo.com – informs of a possible child of William Brownlee born 1878. Irene Brownlee died 1 March 1912 aged 2 years 1 month and 22 days in Vaughan Tp., cause of death bronchia pneumonia, about 2 weeks and bronchitis, 48 hours. Informant: father William Brownlee of Purpleville and mother Bertha Roninson of York County. 035829-12, (death certificate).

21/3/05 – Lynn Crockett jic95129family@yahoo.com - This Brownlee family married into my Cowan family and resided in the Toronto, Ontario area. Another coincidence, a Nisbet married into the Cowan family.

All of the information regarding the Jeffery family, (Elizabeth BROWNLEE 1857-1950), was supplied to me by Don Jeffrey of Kent UK.

I do have a chart received from Alan Young in 1995 (he lived in the Toronto, Ontario area), which starts with - William Brownlie - Margaret Paton and includes:

Alexander Brownlie (1789-1852) + Marion Lightbody (1786-1851)

Catherine Brownlie (1837-1885) + Thomas Lightbody (1834-1914)

In a message dated 1995, Alan states - My Brownlie ancestors lived in Covington; earliest I know is William Brownlie and spouse Margaret Paton.

He had discovered a cousin in Oregon, USA - their grandmothers (Lightbody) were sisters; had emigrated from Scotland at different times and the two branches of the family had been out of touch since before WW1.

Last night, while google searching, I came across the following -

82121777 - Brownlee genealogy, on the descendants of Archibald Brownlee born 1710 in Strathaven Lanarkshire Scotland by James Clin.
