1. James Brownlie, born 4 January 1854 at Dalry, Ayr, Scotland; married on 31 December 1873, at Dalry, Ayr to Margaret Dean (or Dine). One of their sons possibly migrated to California.

2. Catherine Brownlie, born 28 January 1855 at Dalry, Ayr, Scotland; married on 5 June 1874 at Dalry, Ayr to James Murray.

3. Charles Brownlie born 24 April 1857 at Dalry, Ayr, Scotland and married Margaret Ingram.

4. Robert Brownlie, born 5 January 1860 at Dalry, Ayr, Scotland, died 7 March 1933 at Sharon, PA. Married on 31 Dec. 1883 at Dalry, Ayr to Susannah Allan born 14 April 1861 at Ballyroney, Down, Ireland, died 31 July (?) at Masury, OH. Robert migrated to the USA in 1901 along with his son, Robert and they went to the newly opened coalfields in Weir & Scammon, Cherokee Co., KS to work. Susannah Allan Brownlie and the rest of the children, plus Susan Hepburn, who was to marry young Robert Brownlie in Weir, migrated to USA in 1904.

They had issue:

1. Robert Brownlie, born 1882; married c1904 at Scammon, Cherokee Co., KS, USA to Susan Hepburn. Robert migrated with his father in 1901, while Susan Hepburn came with Susannah and the rest of the family in 1904.

2. Mary Ann Brownlie, born 4 July 1887 at Dalry, Ayr, Scotland; married George

Craggs, Scammon, Cherokee Co., KS, USA. Migrated to USA with Susannah in 1904.

3. Maria Brownlie, born 29 January 1889 at Dalry, Ayr, Scotland and was never married. Migrated to USA with Susannah in 1904.

4. James Brownlie, born 12 August 1891 at Dalry, Ayr, Scotland. Married Mary Catherine Manion at Sharon, Mercer County, PA, USA. Migrated to USA with Susannah in 1904.

Joseph Allan Brownlee Jr and Betty Louise Hency also had:

All the men (James, Charles and Robert) were ironstone miners, I believe at Drakemire near Dalry. Robert and his family were the only ones who migrated to the States as far as I know, although one of James' sons migrated to California later. Robert and his son, Robert Jr. came first in 1903. Susannah and the rest of the children, along with Susan Hepburn, came in 1904. They went to Scammon, KS first (ironstone mines) and then moved to Ohio c. 1914.

All the family except Robert and Susan Hepburn Brownlee moved to the Masury, OH and Sharon, PA area in 1914. There are a lot of Brownlee families in the area and I can only surmise that they had other family there and went to join them. Also, somewhere between KS and OH, Brownlie was changed to Brownlee. We have no idea why that happened.

Robert worked at a 'car yard' (railroad) and Susanna looks like she was mighty stern. From what I've heard, he wasn't very easy to live with. As a matter of fact, they were living apart when both passed away in 1933.

I have a suspicion that the first Robert Brownlie below is a son of James Brownlie, tollkeeper at Garrion Bridge and married to Margaret Cullen. Several reasons: James had 6 sons: William, Robert, James, John, Charles, Thomas. Robert's date of birth was 28 December 1828. James' will and inventory (1872) mention all of them, plus that Margaret Cullen Brownlie predeceased him. We believe "our" Robert came to Dalry about 1851 as he's not in the census anywhere in Lanark then, but a Robert Brownlie does appear in Dalry. I have found his brothers still in Lanark (Dalziel, Bothwell). Then, Robert Brownlie's death cert. states that his father was James Brownlie (deceased), mother unknown (deceased). Robert's son James signed the certificate. Margaret Cullen Brownlie died between 1840 (when last child Elisabeth was born) and 1872 (when James died); I don't have the date of death but I believe it was around 1850. Robert's son James was born in 1854, so he might not have known his grandmother's name, especially if his dad did a bunk and was out of favour with the rest of the family. Lastly, there are all the repeated names through the generations (I know, they all did that - it's driven me nuts at times). It's all purely circumstantial but I'm working on getting documented proof.
