Archibald Brownlie, born c1760 grain and flour miller at Garrion Mill and a farmer, married Jean Chapman from Bothwell parish. Marriage proclaimed 12 March 1791. Garrion Mill was still operating in late 1800s.

1. James Brownlie, farmer in Garrion, born c1793 died 31 October 1840[1] (aged 47 years[2]). James married Marion Ferguson[3].

Research Notes for follow up

• John Calder was married to a relative of Archibald Brownlie, born 1799

• John Brownlie and Archibald Brownlie had a married brother in the U.S.A., who had at least two sons who fought in the Civil War, one of which was killed in the Battle of Gettysburg.

• John Brownlie and Archibald Brownlie had a deceased sister, (Female Brownlie), who had died prior to 1863 and who had a daughter, (Unkown), unmarried as at 1863.

• Archibald Brownlie, as at 1863, had only two sons and three daughters out of 11 births.

• James Bryce was a salesman for Archibald Brownlie, who had about 20 employees.

• Archibald Brownlie had an aunt Ann Slalytown who was in the US[21].

• Archibald Brownlie knew John Russell. In the 1851 census, John Russell was noted as an old servant. 88 years. Old and stops with miller. Born Carluke. He had died sometime prior to 16 May 1863 at un ‘unquestionable’ age[22].

• James Brownlee (City Saw Mills) was a son of Alexander Brownlie’s late relatives, who used to repair Alexander Brownlies’ fathers mill in Alexander Brownlies' younger days. (Letter Archibald Brownlie, born 1799, to brother in U.S.A. 26 August 1863, sent by Emilie Galvin).

• Alexander had another brother who had died by 1863 who left a widow and three sons. The wife was remarried to a worker from the mill, Thomas Leiper and had seven sons. Stayed at Garrion farm about 3 years after they were married. They sold off and went to Glasgow where they started a Diary. Thomas Leiper lost an arm in an accident on the railway.

• Alexander Brownlie and John Brownlie had a cousin in Wishaw 1864, called John Young, who had a brother minister who died c1860 plus, who left John Young money.

• Margaret French, a niece, lived with John Brownlie, born 1795, after her mother passed away and while she was a baby, John adopted her into his family. She later married a Russell and lived at Cleghorn Mills. Her name at that time was Margaret French Russell.

• 1841 Census Cambusnethan Parish at Garrion Farm:

James Brownlie, 1, male. 
This matches the information in the letter about James’ widow remaining on the farm with the three sons.  This would put her birth date circa 1816, Archibald Brownlie circa 1837, John Brownlie circa 1838, and James Brownlie circa 1840.[23]

• In 1943, Davenport High School named Marjorie Brownlie “Miss Victory” and held a Victory Dance instead of the traditional Homecoming Queen and Homecoming Dance.
