William Brownlie at Grossgates and Dorothy Downie[1]

They had issue:

1. William Brownlie born 22 April 1759[2] and baptised 23 May 1759 their first child[3].

2. Martha Brownlie born March 1761 and baptised 30 April 1761 their second child[4].

3. Martha Brownlie, a twin born 25 January 1765 and baptised 3 February 1765 their second child[5].

4. Janet Brownlie, a twin born 25 January 1765 and baptised 3 February 1765 their third child[6].

5. Betty Brownlie born 12 July 1769 and baptised 17 July 1769 their fifth child[7].

6. Archibald Brownlie born 14 May 1771 baptised 22 May 1771 their sixth child[8].

 

NOTES

Further research of the Register of Church Session of Cambusnethan Parish Kirk 1739-1767 may be necessary to establish proof that William Brownly or Brownlie mason in Crossgate is the same person as the William Brownlie who married Dorothy Downie. Another possibility is that William the mason and wright is William’s father.

9 August 1740. To William Brownlie, mason and wright at Crossgate for John Naismith’s coffin £1.10.0[9].

5 August 1742. To William Brownly, mason and wright at Crossgate for William Paton’s coffin - for £2.8.0[10].

31 March 1745. Deburst (?) to William Brownly at Crossgate for James Downs (his wife’s cousin) £2.8.0. Deburst to William Brownly for a box to gather the collection. £0.12.0[11].

25 December 1748. To William Brownlie, wright for 2 coffins - £6.0.0[12].

15 March 1750. To William Brownlie, wright for a coffin[13].

25 November 1750. To William Brownlie, wright for a coffin[14].

1 February 1759. To be paid to William Brownlie, mason and wright in Grossgate, for making William Douglas, Jean Selkirk, Janet Loudon, Marion Laurie’s child and Joseph Cunningham’s child, their coffins. The large at £3.0.0 Scots and the children’s at £1.10.0 Scots coffins - £12.0.0[15].

22 April 1759. William Brownlie in Crossgate and Dorothy Downie his spouse compeared before the Session and confessed themselves guilty of antenuptial fornication. The moderator did gravely rebuke them for this their sin and exhorted them to repentance and the Session considering it is (relapsed) to Dorothy Downie. The moderator appointed her to appear in public repentance on Sabbath next and to be rebuked for this her sin for the first time and William Brownlie was appointed to appear in the same place the Sabbath thereafter and be absolved from the scandal[16].

29 April 1759. William Brownlie (his) wifes (?) being in (childbed) appeared this day in public repentance and was rebuked for the sin of antenuptial fornication and was absolved from the scandal[17].

20 May 1759. Dorothy Downie relapse in fornication appeared in the place of public repentance and was rebuked for the sin of antenuptial fornication and was absolved from the scandal, with her husband, William Brownlie[18].
