Typical conditions for "Steerage" passengers in the 1850s

Unknown engraving - note the stairs on right to upper deck. Perhaps this was illustrated at the commencement of the journey. I wonder whether our pioneering forefathers would have looked as fresh as they do here, towards the end of the long journey from the UK to the new lands.
